Pleural Membrane

Two Types

Outer or Parietal Membrane

Inner Visceral Membrane

The function of the pleural membrane is to reduce friction in the lungs by creating a liquid to coat the inside of the lungs

It also provides a smooth surface so that there is no friction between the outside of the lung and the inside of the ribs. If the pleural membrane becomes inflamed you get pleurisy, which is extremely painful.
